A Journey of Discovery

An Interview with Beyza Güzel

In this edition, we spotlight Beyza Güzel, a Turkish trail runner whose passion for the sport has taken her to countless races, including some of the toughest in Türkiye.

Beyza Güzel, a passionate Turkish trail runner, has left her mark on numerous races, winning several of them and inspiring others with her love for the sport. In this exclusive interview, Beyza shares her journey, challenges, and thoughts on the growing world of trail running for women.

Was there a specific moment when you realized trail running was your passion? What is your starting-to-run story?

I can vividly recall the moment I realized trail running was more than just a physical activity for me. I had always been a runner, but one day, I decided to go on a long run in nature. Feeling my feet connect with the earth, hearing the sounds of birds, the strong wind, and finally reaching the summit to witness the breathtaking view—it all deeply moved me. I realized this wasn’t just an activity for my body; it was something that nourished my soul. From that day on, trail running became an essential part of my life.

What’s a common misconception about trail running that you’d like to dispel?

A lot of people think trail running is only for professional athletes or that it’s overwhelmingly difficult. This simply isn’t true. Trail running offers opportunities for every level, from beginners to seasoned runners. It’s a journey of discovery and exploration, not just a competition. I hope more people realize that it’s accessible to everyone and try it for themselves.

What are you looking for in trail running—peace of mind or a challenge? Do you prefer technical or relaxed trails?

For me, it’s both. I enjoy technical trails because they challenge me physically and mentally, requiring strategy and balance with every step. The natural obstacles, like rocky terrains and steep climbs, give me a sense of accomplishment. But trail running is also about finding peace and connecting with nature. Every trail offers something unique—whether it’s a quiet, meditative run or a physically demanding challenge.

Trail running isn’t just for professionals—it’s for everyone. Whether it’s a 5K or a 100K, it’s about challenging your limits and finding joy in the journey.

You’ve participated in many races and won quite a few—do any of your victories stand out as particularly meaningful?

One of my most meaningful victories was at the Cappadocia Ultra Trail, a 120 km race. The geography of that region is stunning, and I had prepared for it extensively. The race was extremely challenging, with steep climbs and technical trails, but I stayed focused on my energy and hydration strategies. Crossing that finish line felt incredibly rewarding.

What is the hardest race you’ve ever run, and how did you overcome it?

One of my toughest races was on Mount Tahtalı, where I trained for Lavaredo by UTMB. We started at midnight and ran through a challenging, dark trail until morning. It was mentally and physically exhausting—being alone in the forest, surrounded by darkness, with only the sounds of nature. I pushed through by staying mentally strong and trusting my preparation. It was an unforgettable experience that taught me resilience.

Trail running is growing as a sport for women. What changes have you noticed, and what does this mean to you?

I’ve noticed a significant increase in female participation in races. In some events, the percentage of women has grown from 12% to 20% or more. This reflects the broader movement toward equality and inclusion in sports, which is wonderful to see. It’s inspiring to watch more women connect with nature and discover their strength through trail running.

How do you think races like Kaçkar by UTMB can support and encourage more women to participate?

Safety is one of the most important aspects for women in trail running. Ensuring well-marked trails, clear communication, and supportive environments are key. I’ve seen how dedicated the Kaçkar team is to these details, and I think they can make a significant impact by emphasizing inclusivity and highlighting women’s achievements in the sport.

What excites you most about Kaçkar by UTMB, and why should others join this race?

Kaçkar is a unique and beautiful region. During my time there, I discovered trails and landscapes unlike anything else in Türkiye. It’s a race that every runner and their supporters should experience. The connection to nature and the depth of the terrain make it unforgettable. I truly believe it will become a must-run event for many.

If you could describe trail running in one word, what would it be and why?

Discovery.

Trail running is not just about exploring new routes but also discovering your limits, your strength, and even the beauty of nature and your inner self. Every step brings you closer to something new.
